Carpentersville police officers, Fox View guard beaten while towing vehicle

Three Carpentersville police officers and Fox View Apartments security guard were beaten Wednesday evening while attempting to tow a vehicle they suspected contained drugs.

Matthew J. Williams, 19, of 1935 S. Christiana, Chicago, was charged in court Thursday with two counts of aggravated battery to a police officer and two felony counts of resisting a police officer in connection with the incident.

His brother, Samuel Williams, 21, of the same address, was charged with one count of each of charge, police said.

Officers went to 4 Middlesex, Apt. 8, for a 911 hangup call at 5:23 p.m. Wednesday where, police said, they smelled an odor of marijuana coming from the apartment.

A security officer at Fox View approached the officers and pointed out a 1991 Lincoln in the parking lot owned by the two men. Both, officers were told, had been banned from the complex.

A Carpentersville K-9 unit was called and the dog gave an indication that drugs were in the car, police said.

While the car was being towed, police said, the Williams brothers ran into the parking lot and began pushing, hitting and kicking the three police officers and the security guard until more police arrived and arrested them.

Three Carpentersville police officers and Samuel Williams were taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin where they were treated and released.

Officer Joseph Murphy was treated for multiple areas of swelling and bruising to his head and forehead. Officer Alan Webb received four stitches to his lower lip and Officer Jason Nilles received three stitches to his right leg where his K-9 unit bit him during the fracas, police said.

Samuel Williams was treated for numerous dog bites, police said.

Information obtained from the Williams brothers at Thursday's bond hearing in Elgin indicate they had numerous arrests and convictions for drug and weapons offenses.

Bond was set at ten percent of $175,000 for Matthew Williams and ten percent of $50,000 for Samuel Williams.

Both were taken to the Kane County jail Thursday and have court dates on Dec. 3 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
