Makeover for battered women's shelter
Seventy Home Depot employees made an unusual house call Tuesday to very extraordinary house.
The group spent several hours painting the walls of Safe House, an emergency shelter in Rolling Meadows for women and children escaping from domestic violence. It's run by Schaumburg-based Women in Need Growing Stronger, or WINGS.
The work was part of a larger makeover of the shelter, which much of the design work and labor donated by companies like DesignWise and GE Healthcare. The furniture came form WINGS resale shops.
The shelter, which operates from a secret location, has served more than 700 women and children since opening in 2005. It can house up to 45 people nightly and provides counseling and medical, legal and financial support.
The 13th annual Home Run for WINGS fundraiser takes place Saturday, Oct. 18, at Holy Family Catholic Community, 2515 Palatine Road, Inverness.
Registration is 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., with the 5K starting at 9 a.m., a 1-mile walk at 9:15 a.m. and a junior jog, for ages 10 and under, is at 10 a.m. Entry is $30; $10 for the junior jog.
