Audition Tuesday for upcoming play
Powerhouse Productions will hold auditions for its Black History Month production "Black Wall Street" from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Schaumburg Township, One Illinois Blvd., Hoffman Estates. Auditions are open to all ages and races. Performances will be in February at the Schaumburg Prairie Center for the Arts.
Harper collects books for kids
The Harper College Library is seeking donations for its 15th annual Kids Read Book Drive. Organizers aim to collect 1,500 new and gently used books to help promote children's literacy. The drive runs through the end of October.
Donations will go to Township High School District 214's Community Education program and Elk Grove Township. Both distribute the books to low-income children, women's programs and families participating in English courses.
Books can be dropped off in Harper's Library on the main floor of Building F, or in boxes across campus at 1200 W. Algonquin Road, Palatine.
Palatine shop seeks used bike donations
Mike's Bike Shop in Palatine is kicking off its eighth annual Bikes for Needy Kids Program and needs your support.
Gently used bikes donated to the shop will be refurbished, cleaned and distributed to needy families. Though bikes of all sizes are welcome, bikes for little boys and girls are especially needed.
Bicycles will be donated to the Palatine Opportunity Center, Good Hope, churches, orphanages, Boys & Girls Clubs and missionaries. The main focus is local, but some bikes end up all over the world.
Donations may be dropped off anytime during regular business hours through Thanksgiving at the bike shop, 155 N. Northwest Highway, Palatine.
Since the program's inception in 2000, more than 900 bikes have been refurbished and donated throughout the community.
Teddy bears coming to Schaumburg
The Collectible Teddy Bear Show and Sale will be from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at the Chicago Marriott Schaumburg, 50 N. Martingale Road.
Teddy Bears made by renowned artists and one-of-a kind collectible bears will be on exhibit and for sale. Ken Yenke, noted Antiques Road Show Appraiser will be on hand to appraise your old bears. Admission to the show is $6, $2 for children.
