NAMI: The National Alliance on Mental Illness-DeKalb, Southern Kane and Kendall Counties Inc. will hold a general meeting from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 in the Dunlevy-Walsh room at Provena Behavioral Health Care, Aurora. The public is invited. Area legislators and area agencies affected by recent cuts in service for mental health will address these issues. Light refreshments will be available. Kane County Audubon Society: The public is invited to programs and activities of the Kane County Audubon Society.
On Saturday, Oct. 4, take a field trip at 8 a.m. to Nelson Lake, Dick Young Forest Preserve. On the first Saturday of each month Kane County Audubon invites the public to join them as they view the birds at Nelson Lake. This month, they will look for fall migrants and new arrivals. Meet in the parking lot by the silo, which is on the west side of Nelson Lake Road, about three-quarter mile south of Main Street and 2 miles west of Randall Road in Batavia. On Wednesday, Oct. 8, join in Meeting Night at 6 p.m. at Peck Farm located at Peck and Kaneville roads, about half-mile west of Randall Road in Geneva. The program will be on "Bird Research in our Area of Illinois." The speakers will be Judy Pollock, director of Bird Conservation for Audubon Chicago, and Joe Suchecki, steward and bird monitor at Springbrook Prairie. On Saturday, Oct. 25, take a bird walk at 8 a.m. at Burnidge Forest Preserve, 38W235 Big Timber Road, Elgin. They will be looking for fall migrants, waterfowl, and winter arrivals. From Geneva, go north on Randall Road to Route 20, go west about three miles to Coombs Road, then north about 3 miles to the forest preserve's west entrance. Meet just inside the west entrance. League of Women Voters: Candidates vying for the 14th Congressional seat will be featured in a League of Women Voters candidate forum at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5 in St. Charles. The public is invited to attend the nonpartisan event in which incumbent Democratic Congressman Bill Foster and his Republican opponent, Jim Oberweis, will present their views. The forum will be held at the Norris Cultural Arts Center, 1040 Dunham Road, St. Charles. The forum is sponsored by the Leagues of Geneva-St. Charles, Batavia, and Elgin in cooperation with the Daily Herald, Beacon News, and Kane County Chronicle. Within a moderated format, a panel of reporters will direct questions to the candidates, followed by questions from the audience. At the end of the forum the audience will be invited to meet informally with the candidates. The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization which never endorses candidates. The purpose of league candidate forums is to offer the public an opportunity to hear and compare the views of candidates in an open, unbiased setting. Questions for the candidates may be submitted in advance by the public via lwvgenstc.org.
Elburn Bunco: Every year, Elburn Bunco for Breast Cancer works toward educating women about breast health as well as donating our profits to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
In the past 4 years, the organization has donated more than $50,000 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. This fight is made possible by the generous support of people like you.
The fifth annual Bunco for Breast Cancer will be held on Sunday, Oct. 5 at Lions Park in Elburn with sessions at 1 and 6 p.m. Become a "Pink Ribbon Sponsor" and donate a raffle or door prize with program recognition. Become a "Breast Cancer Awareness Partner" for $100 and have your name listed in the program, along with recognition as a table sponsor. This donation will help us underwrite the event cost and expenses. "Celebrate a Survivor" who continues to inspire or in memory of a loved one who you wish to honor and remember fondly. Aurora Junior Woman's Club: The Aurora Junior Woman's Club invites women, age 18 and older, who are interested in becoming members to their meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6 at Cool Acres, located just north of Indian Trail on Route 25. The Oktoberfest-themed meeting will include a cookout dinner of hot dogs, brats and all the fixing and a "design-a-scarecrow" contest. The Aurora Junior Woman's Club/Aurora Children's Dental Services is a nonprofit organization made up of women from throughout the Fox Valley and has been dedicated to serving the needs of local children for more than 40 years. Each year, the club stages a musical production to entertain the families of the Fox Valley. The profits from the performances go directly back to the community in the form of dental work for children who otherwise would not be able to afford the care. It also funds donations to school theater programs, Make-A-Wish programs and other local charitable endeavors.
Geneva Garden Club: The Geneva Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at the Geneva History Center, 113 S. Third St., Geneva. Refreshments will be served from 11:30 a.m. to noon. The business meeting begins at noon. For details, call (630) 232-4268.
Fox Valley Woodworkers: Fox Valley Woodworkers Club Inc. meets from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at Bethany Lutheran Church, 8 S. Lincoln Ave., Batavia. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The next meeting will be Oct. 7. Club member Rich Rossio, an expert turner and retired teacher, will present "New Turning Tricks for Turners New & Old." Learn some neat new ideas and techniques from one of the area's best turning instructors and longtime turner. Fox Valley Bicycle & Ski Club: Club meetings are at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month at the Batavia Public Library, Route 31 and Wilson Street in Batavia. For information, visit fvbsc.org. The social hour will be at 7 p.m. with the program at 7:30 p.m. A discussion of business matters will be at 8 p.m. Ed Barsotti, executive director of the League of Illinois Bicyclists, will speak at the Oct. 8 meeting of the Fox Valley Bike and Ski Club. Barsotti will provide an update on what our towns in the Fox Valley and beyond are doing to provide bicycle paths and to promote safe bicycling in the area. He will also discuss the League's own advocacy work for the year ahead. Barsotti bikes 3,000 miles per year in the area, for both transportation and recreation.
Fox Valley Newcomers and Neighbors: The Fox Valley Newcomers and Neighbors welcomes the fall season during their October luncheon on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Wildwood restaurant, 477 S. Third St., Geneva. The social hour commences at 11:30 a.m. with lunch at noon, followed at 1:30 p. m. with a presentation by Kathleen Newhouse, owner of Park Place Interiors, on "Accessorizing with Style," a workshop on how well placed accessories can change your home. The luncheon begins with a field green salad, followed by your choice of a chicken salad croissant with all white meat chicken, blended with granny smith apples, sun-dried cherries and toasted almonds on an all butter croissant served with fresh fruit and homemade chips; classic Caesar salad with salmon; quesadillas with sliced portobello mushrooms placed between two flour tortillas grilled with artichokes, roasted red peppers and spinach and herb goat cheese or crab cakes, a combination of lump crabmeat and sweet shrimp, blended with red peppers, scallions and seasoned bread crumbs served over crispy shoestring potatoes and a Dijon mustard sauce with a dessert of raspberry tiramisu and your choice of coffee, iced tea or soda. Batavia Bunco for Breast Cancer: The Batavia Bunco for Breast Cancer Committee is once again hosting a night of rolling the dice. The fourth annual fundraiser will be held on Friday, Oct. 17. Last year, the event raised more than $13,000 for breast cancer research. Because of the increasing interest in the event, it has been moved from Riverview Banquets to the Lincoln Inn, 1345 S. Batavia Ave, Batavia. The fundraiser hosted 250 ladies last year. This year attendance is limited to 200, so buy your tickets early.
Participants will get three rounds of bunco, appetizers, goody bags and a chance to win door prizes for a $25 entry fee. There will also be a cash bar, silent auction, and a Chinese raffle.
New this year is a quilt raffle. The "New Bees" quilting circle in Batavia have created a breast cancer quilt for our fundraiser. The quilt is on display at Sue's Family Hair in Batavia. Raffle tickets are $5 each. The night of the event doors will open at 5 p.m., and games will start at 6:15 p.m. There will be an hour of appetizers which will give our attendees time to preview the silent auction items and Chinese raffle prizes. Batavia Mothers' Club: Batavia Mothers' Club: The Batavia Mothers' Club Foundation will host its annual Arts and Craft Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Mooseheart Fieldhouse, on Route 31 on the Batavia/North Aurora border. The show will include more than 100 artisans featuring handmade fine art, glass, photography, quilting, woodwork and floral items. Admission is $3. The Arts and Craft Show also boasts one of the largest bake sales in the area, featuring a wide selection of cakes, pies, cookies, breads and more, plus a limited supply of the winning brownies from this year's Brownie Bake-Off. The best brownies will be chosen by some of Batavia's very own local officials at the new Limestone coffee shop in downtown Batavia and will be available for purchase at the craft show. Proceeds from the show are distributed to local charities whose work improves the lives of children, mothers and families in the Fox Valley community. Illinois State Genealogical Society: The Illinois State Genealogical Society will celebrate 40 years as a society with a conference, "40 Years of Discovery - Portals to the Future," on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Fox Valley University and Business Center on the campus of Elgin Community College, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. Featured speakers will be: Beau Sharbrough, product manager for MyFamily.com and founder of the Web site, the GENTECH Web site and the Lexicon Working Group; Lou Szucs, currently executive editor and vice president of community relations for Ancestry.com and author of "They Became Americans: Chicago and Cook County Sources," and D. Joshua Taylor, a nationally recognized genealogical author, lecturer and researcher who is currently the Research Services Coordinator at the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Pottawatomie Garden Club: The Pottawatomie Garden Club ends its 80th year celebration with a luncheon on Monday, Oct. 27 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1145 N. Fifth Ave. (Route 25) in St. Charles. Dee Gatins, luncheon chairwoman, has chosen an anniversary theme. Tables will be decorated with items pertaining to an anniversary year. New and honorary members will be recognized and landscape commendation awards will be given to local businesses by Pat Driessen and Judy Price. Annette and Craig MacLeon, owners of The Pure Gardener in Geneva, will present fall decorating tips. 2009 officers will be presented and 2008 officers and chairwomen recognized. Ruthie Callard, chairwoman of the 80th celebration, will have a surprise ending.
