At least one injured in truck accident near Vernon Hills

At least one person was seriously injured early Tuesday when a GMC Yukon slammed into a gravel truck on Route 45 outside Vernon Hills.

Sgt. Christopher Thompson of the Lake County sheriff's office said the gravel truck was stopped and starting to reverse into a construction entrance at the Majestic Pines subdivision, on Route 45 west of Evergreen Drive, at about 7 a.m.

Thompson said a flagger from the construction company was outside the truck directing traffic, but the female driver of the white Yukon did not see him. The driver hit the flagger before hitting the semi on its passenger, striking a gas tank, Thompson said.

The flagger was transported from the scene to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious head injuries, Thompson said. It's unknown if the semi driver or the driver of the Yukon were injured or transported.

Police have not released the names of the drivers or additional details of the accident because the investigation remains pending.
