Briefs: New bank branch approved
The Des Plaines City Council has approved construction of a new drive-through bank in the plaza at Forest and Lee streets anchored by Aldi Food after the developer agreed to pay $30,000 or half the cost of installing a turn lane. A couple of aldermen commented on how dangerous the intersection is and one wanted installation of a traffic light. City officials said that would cost $400,000 to $600,000, and that current traffic flows aren't sufficient to win approval from the Illinois Department of Transportation, required because Lee is a state route. George Peterson, 57, of Des Plaines, was killed crossing Lee north of Forest last week while on his way home from the food store. Police Chief Jim Prandini said no ticket was issued because it was dark and rainy and Peterson wasn't in the crosswalk.
