Algonquin cemetery walk Oct. 11
In conjunction with the Old Town Merchants Fall Country Harvest Day Event, the Algonquin Historic Commission's will present its sixth annual Historic Cemetery Walk from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday Oct. 11 at the Algonquin Cemetery, Route 31 and Cary Road.
This walk will feature five former residents who will "bring to life" elements of Algonquin's early history through stories of their lives as they meet with visitors including;
• Jess Armstrong, community leader, Algonquin School principal, Village President from 1957 to 1964
• Lafe Benthusen, former Police Chief during the 1920s and 1930s
• Vernon Ford, born in the village in the 1840s, Civil War veteran
• Mrs. Grace Keyes, popular school teacher from 1890s to 1930
• Mrs. Claude Lace, one of the organizers of Algonquin's Centennial Celebration held in 1935.
Advance Tickets for the event are not required, however a donation at the event of $1 per person is requested to help further the work of the commission in preserving Algonquin's diverse and rich history.
Shuttle bus service to and from the event will be provided at no charge from the rear parking lot of Historic Village Hall, 2 S. Main St., starting at 11 a.m. and leaving about every 20 minutes. Limited parking also is available at the cemetery near the water tower on Cary Road.
This has been a very popular event for all ages and a great way to learn About Algonquin's unique and colorful local history. Bring your entire family and discover that history can be fun.
