Elgin Area School District U-46 notes

School holiday

• Monday is Columbus Day. There will be no classes and all offices will be closed.

• On Thursday from noon to 1 p.m., the public is welcome to bring their lunch and meet with Superintendent Jose Torres in room 251 at the Educational Services Center, 355 E. Chicago St. in Elgin.

Bartlett High

• On Saturday, the annual Fine Arts Booster Club Arts & Craft Show will be held throughout the school from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $4 per adult, $3 per student or senior citizen, and free admission for children under age 12.

Streamwood High

• On Thursday, the orchestra students will present a concert at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Admission is $1 for students, $2 for adults and $6 for a family.

Abbott

• On Wednesday afternoon, Abbott Middle School students will attend an assembly presented by a theater group from Chicago called Imagination Theatre. The substance abuse prevention program is called "What Now." This show promotes effective communication, building self-esteem, practicing positive peer pressure, and challenges students to make smart choices for themselves when people around them may not be doing the same.

Ellis

• Every Monday through Thursday from 3:30-5 p.m., a Homework Club meets in the Ellis Middle School library. Members who attend 3 days a week for 3 weeks out of the month will be eligible to attend monthly field trips, such as swimming at The Centre, bowling at Brunswick Zone, attending a movie, or roller skating.

• On Friday, an all-school Fall Dance will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the school.

Tefft

• On Wednesdays from 3:15-4:45 p.m., Tefft Middle School students can receive homework help and participate in a fun club at the Astor Avenue Community Center provided by Hanover Township Youth & Family Services. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. To register, call (630) 540-9085.

• On Friday, the Mega Event Fundraiser Reward party will be held from 3:20 to 4:40 p.m. This will include carnival games, mini golf, inflatable games, refreshments and more.

Clinton

• During the month of October, the Clinton Elementary students will be collecting used eyeglasses and hearing aids. The two classes with the largest collections will win a pizza party.

Glenbrook

• During the month of October, Glenbrook Elementary School is hosting a food/supply drive for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Students are asked to bring in a variety of supplies that will be shipped through Hanover Township.

Washington

• During the week, a Book Fair will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Washington Elementary School library. Hispanic Heritage Night will be celebrated on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. The book fair will also be open during this time.

Wayne

• On Tuesday through Friday, Wayne Elementary School will be holding a book fair.

• On Wednesday from 8:30 a.m.to 12:30 p.m., the school will hold an open house. Tours will begin at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Also on Wednesday, the school will host a Family Math Night, combined with the Book Fair. Family night is a chance for students to teach their parents how to play Everyday Math games/puzzles that they learn in school.

In other news

• Twelve students from Streamwood High School's World Languages and International Studies Academy participated in a three-week trip to Japan in June. The trip included home stays and school visits in Okuizumo, Shimane, and sightseeing in Hiroshima, Kyoto and Tokyo. They had a great time experiencing such a unique culture.
