McHenry County College notes
McHenry County College will host "The Community's Response to Family Violence," a symposium from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 15 in the MCC Conference Center. This one-day event is presented by the 22nd Judicial Circuit Family Violence Coordinating Council, chaired by the Honorable Michael J. Sullivan, chief judge.
Keynote speaker will be Teri Jendusa Nicolai, domestic violence survivor, who will share her experience of in the hope of saving others from the tragedy of domestic violence. During the cold harsh winter of Wisconsin in 2004, Nicolai was beaten with a baseball bat by her ex-husband, placed in a garbage can, locked in a storage facility and left for dead.
The symposium is recommended for judges, attorneys, teachers, health care providers, probation officers, law enforcement, social workers, caregivers, counselors, faith community members and anyone interested in the issues and effects of family violence.
Breakout sessions will be presented on: evidence-based prosecution and family violence, faith-based identification of families in crisis, and children and impact of domestic violence.
Another highlight will include a workshop, "How to Avoid Job Burnout and Job-Related Stress," facilitated by Sheila Krippner, LCSW, supervisor for Provena Health Employee Assistance program. She will provide tools for people to strive for a balance between heavy workloads and relationships, family responsibilities and outside interests.
Certifications of participation will be provided and CEUs, CPDUs and MCLEs are available. To register, call the MCC Registration Office at (815) 455-8588 and reference the course ID. Seminar fee is $40 for those seeking CEUs and CPDUs (course ID: USP U64 001) and $30 for those seeking MCLEs and Certificates of Participation (course ID: QDV S01 001). Cost includes continental breakfast and lunch.
