Briefs: Hoffman auction for WINGS

A silent auction benefiting Women In Need Growing Stronger Program, or WINGS, will take place 6 p.m. today at Hoffman Estates Mayor William McLeod's annual mayoral ball at the Stonegate Conference Center. The auction raised $22,000 last year, and this is the event's 4th year. Auction items include sports memorabilia, jewelry and a Jackson Hole, Wy. vacation. McNamara remembered

The eighth annual Shannon McNamara 5-K Run and 2-mile walk will be held at 9 a.m. on Sunday at Rolling Meadows High School, 2901 Central Road in Rolling Meadows. She was a Rolling Meadows native who was killed in 2001 while attending Eastern Illinois University by a neighbor, Anthony Mertz, who currently is on death row. Preregistration is $15 and race-day cost is $20. Students can register for $5. Proceeds go to the Shannon McNamara Scholarship Fund at Rolling Meadows High School. Flu shots available

Northwest Community Hospital's Healthy Aging/Senior Services department is sponsoring three flu shot clinics this fall for ages 3 and up. The first two are walk-in clinics that do not require registration. Times and locations are: 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church Health Fair, 1234 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights; 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Buffalo Grove Village Hall, 50 Raupp Blvd.; and Friday, Nov. 7, at the Wheeling Township Community Center, 1616 N. High school garage sale

Palatine High School will host a garage sale benefiting its show choir, Forte, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at 2222 N. Rohlwing Road. Donations may be dropped off until 6 p.m. today. For information, call (847) 755-1600.

Job search help offered

Resources for finding a job will be available free from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 25, at Kingswood United Methodist Church, 401 W. Dundee Road, Buffalo Grove, as one of many local events that are part of the national Make a Difference Day. Topics include how to access job banks, networking, interviewing techniques, writing a resume and child care options for working parents. Professionals from a variety of local agencies and the Illinois Employment and Training Center will be available.

Get a free $15 Macy's gift card

To celebrate its 150th birthday, the Macy's stores in Woodfield Mall and Oak Brook will hand out free $15 gift cards to the first 150 customers at each store Saturday. Doors open at 10 a.m. The gift cards must be used that day and will only be given to people age 18 and older. They cannot be used on clearance or furniture items. To add to the festivities, cheerleaders from Maine West and the AYC Des Plaines Warriors will perform at the Woodfield store.

Women's car clinic Saturday

The newly relocated DJ's Auto Service Center at 495 Estes Ave. in Schaumburg will hold a women's car clinic from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, so that women will know what they are actually paying for when coming in for service. Representatives of the business will speak on how to handle common problems and routine maintenance. Recommended dress is jeans and tennis shoes for optional hands-on training.
