Palatine recycling challenge
The Village of Palatine will participate in the Cans for Cash City Recycling Challenge beginning today, Oct. 1, through Friday, Oct. 31. This national contest challenges cities to collect the most recyclable aluminum beverage cans and to develop innovative ideas for promoting participation. Any awards received will be used to further recycling efforts and education in Palatine.
Residents participate by placing aluminum cans in their recycling carts for weekly curbside collection. Participants may also bring aluminum cans to the designated aluminum can recycling container for drop off located in the south parking lot across from the village hall at 200 E. Wood St.,

LifeCenter Fitness open house
The Bartlett Park District LifeCenter Health and Fitness Club will hold an open house from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at 700 S. Bartlett Road, Bartlett. The Life Center Health and Fitness Club provides classes, programs and services to the residents of the Bartlett Park District and surrounding communities including personal training, group fitness classes such as Pilates, Zumba, spin, belly dance and more. Autumn Harvest Festival
Spend an afternoon in the country without leaving the suburbs by attending the annual Autumn Harvest Festival at Schaumburg Park District's Spring Valley, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road. This popular event will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday Oct. 5, and features hands-on demonstrations of pioneer-era and 1880s farm life such as cider pressing, grain threshing and blacksmithing.
Homemade foods, old-time string music, crafts, games and a hayride will be offered. Parking is available at the Nature Center on Schaumburg Road and on the west side of Plum Grove Road, just south to Schaumburg Road.
