Teen in serious condition after Thursday crash

A 16-year-old Huntley High School student from Lake in the Hills was in serious condition after crashing into a tree west of Huntley, police said.

The teen was driving a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix north on Coyne Station Road about 2:40 p.m. Thursday when he ran off the road, hit a tree and spun around before stopping, according to McHenry County Sheriff's police.

The driver was trying to overtake another vehicle in a no-passing zone, police said.

The driver and his 17-year-old passenger, Michael Clark, were taken to Centegra Memorial Medical Center in Woodstock, according to police. Clark, who also attends Huntley High School and lives in Lake in the Hills, has been released.

"He's doing fine," said Constance Ryan, Clark's mother. "He's a little shaken up."

The driver of the Grand Prix will be cited for traffic violations, sheriff's Sgt. Carolyn Hubbard said.

It does not appear that alcohol, drugs or mechanical failure played roles in the crash, Hubbard said.

Police did not release the driver's name because he is underage.

He was wearing a seat belt, and the air bags in the Grand Prix appeared to be working properly, police said.

The McHenry County Sheriff's Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the crash.
