Briefs: Last day to comment

Today is the last chance area residents have to weigh in on Canadian National's proposed purchase of the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway Co. CN wants to use the EJ&E line, which runs in an arc around the Chicago region, to reroute freight traffic from lines in Chicago and inner suburbs. The Surface Transportation Board, a three-member, presidentially appointed board that has final say on the transaction, is accepting comments from area residents on the proposal. Written letters must be postmarked by Sept. 30 and mailed to Phillis Johnson-Ball, Surface Transportation Board, 395 E Street SW, Washington, D.C. 20423. Comments should reference docket No. 35087. Flu vaccine clinics scheduled

The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center will conduct 13 public flu clinics throughout starting Oct. 17 through Nov. 17. Appointments will be offered at five high-volume clinic sites. To make an appointment or for more details about dates, locations and clinic times, visit lakecountyflu.com. Walk-ins will be accepted at these sites. Individuals also may call the clinics directly to make an appointment. Eight clinics are exclusively walk-in. Flu and pneumonia vaccinations for all age groups will be available from 9 to 11 a.m. Mondays from Oct. 20 through Dec. 15 at the Immunization Annex on the Belvidere Medical Campus, 2303 Dodge Ave., Waukegan. Flu vaccinations also will be available at any year-round children's vaccination clinic. Residents 65 and older must bring their Medicare Part B cards to the clinics to cover the cost of the flu and pneumonia vaccines. Medicaid and All Kids insurance will be accepted. Fees are $35 for the flu vaccine and $52 for the pneumonia vaccine, based on the ability to pay. Any Lake County resident over the age of 6 months is eligible to get a flu shot through the health department. District 103 to hold Senior Citizens Day

Lincolnshire-Prairie View Elementary District 103 hosts its 20th annual Senior Citizens' Day, 1:15 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at Daniel Wright Junior High School. Seniors living in Lincolnshire and surrounding communities are invited to attend and enjoy conversation with students, a singalong and a handmade souvenir. Substance abuse talk

Gurnee's Healthy Communities-Healthy Youth organization hosts a talk about substance abuse at 7 p.m. Oct. 14 at Warren-Newport Public Library, 224 N. O'Plaine Road, Gurnee. Parents and children in kindergarten and older are invited to attend the free event. It's part of the organization's "Let's Talk" month in October. Yard signs are expected to go up in Gurnee encouraging parents to chat with their children. Local governmental agencies in Gurnee, businesses and churches are among the Healthy Communities-Healthy Youth participants.
