Faith in Action volunteers applauded

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has signed an executive proclamation declaring Sept. 21 to be Faith in Action Day in Illinois.

Faith in Action programs are coalitions of local religions congregations, health care providers, community organizations and individual volunteers who work together to provide those in need with nonmedical assistance to help them maintain independence.

There are 33 active Faith in Action programs in Illinois. Faith in Action of McHenry County is based in Crystal Lake and has been serving McHenry County seniors since 1998.

Faith in Action volunteers provide services for seniors and others who require assistance to remain in their homes. These activities include: grocery shopping, transportation to medical appointments, cooking, light housework and yard work, running errands, loaning durable medical equipment, and providing companionship. Both the volunteers and the seniors they assist report the relationships they build through Faith in Action are highly rewarding.

The governor's proclamation is meant to recognize the selfless contributions of Faith in Action volunteers, and to encourage the spirit of volunteerism in families and communities across Illinois.
