Briefs: Schaumburg gets FEMA grant

The village of Schaumburg was recently awarded a $271,130 Assistance to Firefighters Grant by the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency. The grant was for the replacement of the fire department's self contained breathing apparatus, which is used by firefighters to protect against breathing toxic fumes and smoke and aid respiration in oxygen-deficient atmospheres. The department's 50 apparatus units were several years old and needed to be replaced with units that met current standards.

Walk to conquer Chiari

The Conquer Chiari Walk Across America is set for 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20. Money raised goes toward grants to improve awareness, diagnosis and treatment of Chiari malformation, a little-known neurological disorder that can cause debilitating pain, weakness, memory loss, numbness, vision problems and other symptoms. The event takes place at the Deer Grove East Forest Preserve, Hicks and Dundee roads in Palatine. Any donation is welcome but walkers are encouraged to raise $100. Democratic women host tea

Northwest Suburban Women Democrats will host a tea on Sunday, Sept. 14 in Elk Grove Village. The event will honor the memory of former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. From 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., the tea will be held at Kenneth Young Center, 1001 Rohlwing Road. The event is free, but replies are requested.
