Lake in the Hills Parks and Recreation programs

For youth

Preschool-On the Bus We Go: Moms, grab your kids and hop on the Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department mini bus on Thursday, Oct. 9, for a trip to Brookfield Zoo. It's not only a scheduled day off school in districts 47 and 300, it's free admission day at the zoo.

The bus leaves at 8:45 a.m. sharp from the village hall and returns at approximately 3:15 p.m. Registration is required; seating is limited. Resident fee is $7, nonresident fee is $9. Fee covers transportation only. Please remember your spending money. If needed, bring your child's car seat.

Magic Class for ages 5-12: Children are guaranteed a great time learning a collection of fascinating and mesmerizing tricks. Amaze family and friends with a variety of tricks including: cards, ropes, coins, mind-reading, and much more! All materials for class are provided by instructor Gary Kantor, and each child receives a magic kit to take home. Children are grouped together by age and always learn age-appropriate tricks. Each class offers new and exciting tricks so sign up for more than one. The next class is from 5:15 to 6:10 on Friday, Oct. 10, at the Algonquin Historic Village Hall, 2 S. Main St., Algonquin. Registration is being accepted at the Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department. Resident fee is $18, and nonresident fee is $22.

School Day off trip for grades 6-9: Don't just sit at home watching television this Columbus Day. Grab a friend, your swimsuit, a towel, and hop on the Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department's mini bus and head to CoCo Key Waterpark in Rockford. Participants must be good swimmers, responsible, and able to be on their own throughout the day. There will be several scheduled and mandatory check-ins with the trip supervisors/chaperones throughout the day. Fee includes transportation, lunch and admission fees. Bus seating is limited, register early. Resident rate is $38, nonresident rate is $48. Bus departs at 10 a.m. sharp from village hall sharp and returns at 7 p.m.

Haunted Halloween Lab-Mad Science-Ages 6-12: Join the Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department Thursday, Oct. 23, and have some spooky fun doing hands-on science experiments with a Mad Scientist. Help trick-or-treaters get away from the monsters on a magnetic bridge. Have you ever seen a pumpkin explode? Learn about chromatography ghosts, grab candy with a robotic arm, make green slime, and much more. Class meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Village Hall Community Room. Resident rate is $27, nonresident rate is $33.

Halloween Bash at Enchanted Castle for grades 6-9: Grab some friends and join the Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department for a spooktacular good time on this totally awesome trip to Enchanted Castle on Friday, Oct. 24. This special Halloween bash includes an all-you-can-eat pizza and pop buffet, ice cream, game tokens, unlimited bumper car rides, mini golf, go-karts, laser tag, karaoke, and a costume contest with prizes. The group departs at 7 p.m. from village hall and returns around midnight. Resident rate is $42, nonresident rate is $50. Don't forget your costume.

For adults

Halloween House Decorating Contest: Who has the scariest or cheeriest house in Lake in the Hills? Call in your own creation, or elect your neighbor's, and parks and rec will come around between 5:30 and 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct, 23 to judge. All winners must keep their creations up through Halloween. Winners will receive a gift certificate to a Lake in the Hills restaurant. Free registration is accepted by calling (847) 960-7460. Only Lake in the Hills homes will be judged.
