Carpool lanes make congestion worse
Carpool lanes may sound good and people cite New York and California as shinning examples of success.
Since I regularly ride roads around Los Angeles and on Long Island, I can say from firsthand experience that they create traffic jams.
As I fly by the stop-and-go traffic thanking that I'm in a car with multiple people, I also see the amount of pollution generated as cars sit in the traffic jams caused by restricted lanes.
We have two types of roads in the Chicago area: inadequate and under construction.
Further restricting flow for carpool lanes will lead to increased traffic jams.
Many cite that this will lead to fewer cars and hence better traffic.
We are over capacity now. Reducing a handful of cars during rush hour will not make things better, not traffic and not pollution.
HOV lanes won't work until we have more capacity for what is on the roads now.
