Woodstock 25, Jacobs 14
After getting its biggest win of the season one week ago, Jacobs' football team was looking to add to its win total when the Golden Eagles traveled to Woodstock Friday night.
Just as things looked to be finally heading in the right direction, the Golden Eagles took a step backwards in their 25-14 loss to the Blue Streaks.
Jacobs committed 10 penalties for 85-yards and was unable to move the ball in the second half in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game.
"We showed a lack of discipline tonight with having that many penalties," Jacobs coach Dean Schlueter said. "Most of those penalties we could have controlled and we did not do a good job of execution. I thought we took a step backwards execution-wise but (Woodstock) had something to do that. They played hard and I think they played harder than we did."
Both teams were able to establish a running game in the first quarter by each scoring a touchdown. Cole Freund got the scoring started for Woodstock (4-3, 1-2) when he broke free for a 67-yard touchdown run. Freund rushed the ball 23-times for 166 yards onm the night.
The Golden Eagles were able to bounce right back on the ensuing drive. Running back Darius Bowers (11 carries, 109 yards) tied the game up with a 74-yard touchdown run.
With 2:05 left in the first quarter, Jacobs' defense stepped up and picked off a pass from Blue Streak quarterback Derek Brown. The Golden Eagles then marched down the field and took the lead on a 2-yard run by Kyle Magnuson.
Woodstock was able to pull within a point just before halftime when Brown connected with Ryan Ortmann for a 36-yard touchdown pass. This was the first of 3 touchdowns that Brown threw to Ortmann.
"We focused in the second half about field position," Blue Streaks coach Steve Beard said. "The special teams in the second half really did an excellent job If you were to chart (Jacobs') starting field position I don't believe they started any closer than the 25, so they consistently had to go a long ways on their drives."
With Jacobs (3-4, 1-2) doing little on offense the Blue Streaks were able to put the game away after taking advantage of a personal foul penalty that gave Woodstock the ball on the Golden Eagles' 22. On the very first play of the drive, Brown connected with Ortmann for his third touchdown of the game.
"The things we can control that we did wrong we have to make better," Schlueter said about his team bouncing back next week. "That is what we have to work on as far as preparation. It's going to take a sense of urgency to get it done. Our backs are against the wall and we need to win both games if we are going to make the playoffs."
