Blood leads to Woodstock burglary arrest

A blood sample taken from a crime scene 18 months ago led to the arrest of a Woodstock man.

McHenry County sheriff's police on Wednesday announced the arrest of Ross W. Zapchenk, 21, on a charge of burglary in connection with a break-in at Hal Mather & Sons Inc. in Woodstock in March 2007.

Police said a window was broken and a safe damaged at the business. The offender apparently was injured when attempting to break into the safe, police said.

A blood sample was collected and sent to state police. An analysis showed the blood was consistent with Zapchenk's, police said.

He was in custody in the McHenry County jail on $40,000 bond. A court date was set for Sept. 16. He also was charged by Woodstock police for unrelated burglaries, according to the sheriff's office.
