Pedal -- and brain -- power needed for Mt. Prospect challenge

Labor Day and summer are behind us and the busy fall stretches out ahead.

For instance, you can test your family's ability to work together Sept. 13 when the Mount Prospect Park District holds its Family Cycle Challenge, starting at Meadows Park at 10 a.m.

A trail map which leads participants to various parks and important locations in the park district will be handed out. At each stop, cyclists will be given fun problems to solve, clues to uncover or obstacles to overcome. Each team must complete the task at each stop before they move on to the next challenge.

Discover how well your family can work together toward a common goal.

The fee is $10 per person in advance or $15 per person on the day of the event. The event is limited to 150 participants, so register early. Phone (847) 632-9333.

Sounds of Brazil: The Mount Prospect Public Library, 10 S. Emerson St., will hold its first Super Saturday of the season for children and parents at 11 a.m. Saturday.

"Rat Pack" Era Music: Those who remember crooners like Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, Frankie Valli, Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra will enjoy hearing Jimmy Niteclub perform tunes from that time. He will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the library.

This program is also sponsored by the library's foundation. To register, log onto www.mppl.org/events or phone (847) 253-5675.

Need to dispose of a damaged flag? Now that the summer patriotic holidays are over, if you have a flag that has become tattered or discolored or otherwise damaged, you can take it to the American Legion Hall, 121 N. Douglas Ave., Arlington Heights for proper disposal.

You cannot just throw American flags away in the garbage. They need to be burned in a ceremony.

The Arlington Heights American Legion has an old mailbox at its hall where people can deposit damaged flags 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They will then dispose of them with respect.

Muscular Dystrophy Telethon: Eighteen Boy Scouts and eight adults from Boy Scout Troop 23, based at the Community Presbyterian Church, made their annual trek downtown Monday to participate in the Jerry Lewis Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy.

They answered phones, took pledges and sorted pledges in the mailroom.

This is the 11th year that the troop has sent representatives to help with this event. They were first invited to participate by a troop member who was affected by muscular dystrophy.
