Briefs: Man indicted in car break-ins
A DuPage County grand jury this week indicted a 26-year-old Naperville man on suspicion he made off with several items, including golf clubs, after breaking into two vehicles July 22. Michael S. Lamb, 227 Spring Ave., is charged with theft and burglary. One of the vehicles, a Ford pickup truck, belonged to Elliott Construction, 231 Spring St., the indictment alleged. The other vehicle was parked on Douglas Avenue.
Man killed by train
Lisle police said a man seemed to purposely step in front of a train about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Lisle Metra station. Sgt. Ron Wilke said the man, who appeared to be in his late 20s or early 30s, stepped off the platform and onto the first rail of the second track just seconds before the 7:26 a.m. express train from Naperville. The engineer hit the brakes but couldn't stop in time to avoid the accident.
Free tuition for veterans
Beginning this fall, Benedictine University in Lisle will offer a free education in some degree programs to active and reserve armed services veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The program marks an expansion of the free education the university offers to Illinois police and fire personnel. Veterans will be able to pursue an associate degree in business administration or a bachelor's degree in management at no tuition cost. They also will be able to pursue a master's in business administration, public health or management and organization at 50 percent tuition cost. For details, see www.ben.edu.
Relief from high prices
To help area families faced with soaring gas prices and a rising cost of living, Benedictine University's athletics department has started a "We Feel Your Pain at the Pump" campaign. Beginning this fall and throughout the 2008-09 season, the Lisle university will waive admission costs to regular-season home sporting events for all Lisle residents and their immediate families. Benedictine teams had top-four finishes in the Northern Athletics Conference in football, women's volleyball, women's soccer, softball and baseball during the 2007-08 season. Firefighters to fill the boot
Naperville firefighters aren't just out battling blazes this summer. Every Friday in August, they are filling their boots by collecting donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. They will go even further by holding their own "Boot-a-Thon" for 72 consecutive hours from Aug. 22 to 24. Firefighters will camp out in downtown Naperville beginning at 7 a.m. Aug. 22 and collect donations until the end of the day Sunday. The firefighters present their checks on the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, which can be viewed Labor Day weekend Aug. 31 to Sept. 1 on WGN-TV, Channel 9.
