Tour of Elk Grove to start in Schaumburg

This weekend's big event in Schaumburg, of course, is Saturday's 90-mile professional bike race that will spend its first 76 miles in the village before heading for the finish line in Elk Grove Village.

The race starts at Alexian Field at 3:30 p.m., then heads north on Springinsguth Road and makes 10 loops on side streets along and south of Weathersfield Way.

Though intended as a professional race, the third annual Tour of Elk Grove (and Schaumburg!) promises to be something of a spectator sport as well.

The 175 bicyclists hail from 23 different countries, but the streets and sights of Schaumburg will be their backdrop as they race for the prize.

The finish line will be on Elk Grove's main course along Tonne Road and Elk Grove Boulevard, but catching the riders along a repeated loop in Schaumburg will be the best place to see the changing progress of the race.

Among the streets to be visited most often are Weathersfield, Braintree Drive, Cedarcrest Drive and Morse Avenue.

If you live along the route or are just visiting, though, it's probably best to keep your own freedom of movement by keeping your car somewhere off the route. All roads are expected to be reopened by about 6:30 p.m.

Library staff show the way: Schaumburg Township District Library staff have been recognized for their efforts in reaching out to and connecting with the community's multicultural population.

The library's exhibit won second place, a red ribbon and a $200 Demco gift certificate at the American Library Association's Diversity and Outreach Fair.

The exhibit was presented by Barbara Adrianopoli, the library's extension services director. It was called "Having Fun Learning the More We're Different, the More We're the Same," with the subtitle, "Diversity is just another way of say how we all contribute to one another."

The display included photos from the library's adult literacy groups and multicultural groups served by the Youth Services and Extension Services departments, brochures and newsletters.

The event was sponsored by Demco and the ALA Officer for Literacy and Outreach. Demco provides supplies, furniture and equipment to libraries and schools.

Two other staff members played a role in the fifth edition of "Excellence in Library Services to Young Adults," published by the ALA to highlight 25 of the best teen programs in the nation along with ideas for replicating them in school and public libraries.

Amy Alessio, the library's teen coordinator, edited the new edition and Roxy Ekstrom, Youth Services librarian and storyteller, was one of the judges selecting items for inclusion.

WACO Wing Fest results: Congratulations to Dover Straits for winning the judge's prize at last Sunday's Wing Fest at Alumni Club benefiting the Woodfield Area Children's Organization.

Dover Straits won for its creative Strawberry Margarita-flavored wings, while Rosebud restaurant won the People's Choice Award for its broiled, oregano-flavored wings.
