Judge orders evaluation of Lisle teen charged with stabbing

A DuPage County judge ordered Thursday a mental evaluation for a teen charged in a near-fatal stabbing during an underage drinking party in Lisle.

Ryne D. McGovern, 17, remains in jail on a $1 million bond on charges of attempted murder after he was accused of repeatedly stabbing another teen early Aug. 10 during a party on 5000 block of Queens Cove near Lisle.

Circuit Judge Kathryn Creswell approved the exam at the request of defense attorney Gene Ognibene, who expressed concern about McGovern's mental health and well being.

Prosecutors also are seeking a second expert opinion in anticipation McGovern seeks an insanity defense.

The victim, Robert McGrath, 19, survived five to six stab wounds in his neck, chest and torso. McGovern is accused of attacking McGrath as he slept on a sofa in his upstairs bedroom during a party in his parents' home.

Witnesses led police to McGovern, who was staying at his grandmother's house in Lisle. He also is known to live in Aurora with his father.

In a videotaped statement, authorities said McGovern said he just "wanted to kill someone," but it did not appear that he set out to target McGrath specifically.

If convicted, McGovern faces six to 30 years in prison.
