Strong South Asian presence at this Septemberfest

A yearlong outreach effort to Schaumburg's burgeoning South Asian community will bear fruit at this year's upcoming Septemberfest.

For the first time, the area's South Asian culture will be represented in the parade and have a courtesy booth at the festival.

As part of the South Asian Immigration Integration Grant awarded to Schaumburg and the Schaumburg Business Association in 2007, members of the grant's advisory committee, the SBA and the village will take part in the final day of Septemberfest on Labor Day, Sept. 1.

The parade begins at 10 a.m. that day on Summit Drive and runs between Hartford Drive and Stockport Lane.

The South Asian cultural parade float will be decorated in the colors of the Indian and Pakistani flags. Individuals riding the float will be wearing traditional clothing as they hand out candy from India.

The South Asian courtesy booth will be on the festival grounds of the Robert O. Atcher Municipal Center at 101 Schaumburg Court. The booth will feature highlights from Bollywood films, drawing for prizes and mehndi application - temporary tattoos that are traditionally applied during Indian weddings or festivals.

Fall Fitness Preview Day:

The Schaumburg Park District will be offering a sneak peek of its fitness facilities and programs to newcomers early next month.

Fall Fitness Preview Day will run from 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 6 at the Community Recreation Center, 505 N. Springinsguth Road in Schaumburg.

The event will allow fitness beginners, experts and everyone in between to see what's being offered this fall. Some of the activities include mini personal training sessions as well as blood pressure and body fat percentage analysis.

"This is a great opportunity to get a free sampling of classes without the enrollment process," said Jennie Bever, fitness supervisor at the recreation center.

There will be an 11 a.m. shotgun start. The entry fee of $420 per foursome includes 18 holes of golf, use of a cart, a box lunch, dinner and prizes.

For more information or to register, call Bill Benedict at (847) 226-6269.

The Rolling Knoll Country Club is located at 11N260 Rohrssen Road in Elgin.
