Lisle teen charged in near-fatal stabbing
A 17-year-old man was ordered held Monday on a $1 million bond after being accused of a near-fatal stabbing during a weekend party near Lisle.
Ryne D. McGovern is charged with repeatedly stabbing a 19-year-old man early Sunday as he slept on a sofa in his upstairs bedroom during a party on the 5000 block of Queens Cove near Lisle.
The victim, Robert McGrath, who lives with his parents, was upgraded from critical to serious condition at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, officials said. He suffered five to six stab wounds in his neck, chest and torso.
In bond court, prosecutor Jeffrey Muntz said Monday that McGovern admitted in a videotaped interview with police that he "wanted to kill someone," but it did not appear that he set out to target McGrath specifically. He said McGovern also led authorities to where he hid the knife.
Police were called about 1:30 a.m. Sunday after McGrath's brother found his injured sibling. Muntz said witnesses at the party identified McGovern as a person of interest.
"He was seen going up the stairs," Muntz said.
Authorities tracked down McGovern shortly later at his grandmother's house in Lisle, where the defendants sometimes stayed. He also listed his father's address in Aurora when cited for speeding last week in Warrenville.
McGovern remained in custody overnight and appeared early Monday in bond court.
DuPage Associate Judge Brian Diamond set the $1 million bond. McGovern must post the required 10 percent to be released. He does not have a prior criminal history.
McGovern is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 8 before DuPage Circuit Judge Kathryn Creswell in Wheaton. If convicted, he faces six to 30 years in prison.
Attempts to reach both men's families were unsuccessful Monday.
