Adopt an Animal: Aug. 1-31, Vernon Area Public Library District, 300 Olde Half Day Road, Lincolnshire. Twice a year, the library participates in ADOPT an Animal program at Lincoln Park Zoo. Visit the display and learn fun facts about the Hoffman's Two-toed Sloth. All participants receive a free gift for answering a true/false quiz. One entrant will win a small plush sloth.
Save-A-Pet 36th Anniversary Reunion: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 2, Save-A-Pet Adoption Center, 21664 N. Fairfield Road, Grayslake. Return to Save-A-Pet with an adopted pet a leash (or his or her photo) and share special and heartwarming pet stories with staff, volunteers and other pet lovers. Potential adopters are invited, too. Free food, refreshments, games, vendors, dog wash, Reiki mini-consultations, and live music by Jazzman Jeff Justman. Going Batty: 7:30 to 9 p.m., Aug. 2, Lakewood Forest Preserve, on Route 176, west of Fairfield Road near Wauconda, Picnic Shelter E. Meet the Little Brown Bats at the Lake County Forest Preserves' Going Batty program. As the sun sets, watch the colony of Little Brown Bats take flight. All ages are invited. Bird Banding: 9 a.m.-noon Aug. 3, Stillman Nature Center, 33 W. Penny Road, Barrington. Watch a licensed bird-bander measure, weigh and record data about Stillman's resident and migratory birds. Be prepared to hike the trails. Free. Call (847) 428-6957.
Plant Clinic: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4, Fremont Public Library, 1170 N. Midlothian Road, Mundelein. Master Gardeners with University of Illinois Extension, Lake County office, will answer gardening questions as well as identify disease, insect and weed problems. Drop in anytime. Samples should be fresh and enclosed in a plastic bag or container.
Orphans of the Storm event: 6-8:30 p.m. Aug. 4, Orren Pickell Showhouse, the Scottish Manor, 30 Aberdeen Court, Bannockburn. Evening to raise awareness of puppy mills.
