Javens campaign office now open

Carol Javens, a Wheeling Democrat running for state legislator in House District 53, has opened her campaign office at 216 W. University Drive in Arlington Heights.

Office hours are 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Her opponent is Republican state Rep. Sid Mathias of Buffalo Grove, the current state representative.

Need passport help? Come to the 'fair'

The Arlington Heights Post Office, 909 W. Euclid Ave., will host a "Passport Fair" from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 23. Postal Service sales and service associates will help residents with passport applications, fees and photos.

Travelers can apply for a regular passport or the new U.S. Passport Card - which can be used only for land and sea travel between the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean. Visit www.usps.com/passport.

This police academy open just for seniors

The Des Plaines Police Department will host a 10-week Senior Citizen Police Academy, from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesdays from Sept. 3 to the Nov. 5 graduation. Classes are at the Frisbie Center, 52 E. Northwest Hwy., Des Plaines.

The academy is free. Attendees will learn about the various operations of the police department, as well as how to protect yourself against identity theft, cons, scams and fraud, plus personal safety and driving tips. The program includes classroom training, open discussion, and hands-on training. Seniors will take a two-hour "ride along" with a police officer and experience patrol operations.

Hear about latest MS clinical trials

The MS Elk Grove Support Group will host a discussion on clinical trials in multiple sclerosis, given by Dr. Anthony Reder from the University of Chicago, at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Elk Grove Library, 1001 Wellington. A question and answer period will follow. Call Joni at (847) 352-7034

Wheeling police invite citizens in

Applications are being taken for the fall session of the Wheeling Police Department's Citizen Police Academy.

The free classes meet from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays from Sept. 4 to Nov. 13. The classes detail what the various police units do - such as patrol, traffic crime prevention, community relations, forensic evidence and investigations.

The officers also will discuss domestic violence, child abuse, use of force, criminal and juvenile law, community policing and range training.
