Teens chosen for library board
Schaumburg Township District Library trustees this week selected the first two student advisers to serve on the board.
Both 16-year-old Aakash Bavishi and 17-year-old Sajan Patel are students at Hoffman Estates High School. They were selected from among nine applicants - three each from Conant, Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg high schools.
Library Trustee Adam Sesso not only came up with the idea of having student advisers on the board, he led the selection committee.
"It was tough because we had such good applicants," Sesso said. "The two that we chose were heavily involved in the community. They both had very strong interpersonal skills and shared a passion for activism."
The two teens will both serve a one-year term, but will be free to reapply for the annual program open to community members ages 15 to 20. Bavishi will be a junior this year and Patel a senior.
Though the two will not have a formal vote on the board as do those elected by the public, they will provide a different perspective on issues, particularly involving teen use of the library.
Kindergarten eye clinics
The Palatine Lions Club is working with Palatine Vision and School District 15 to sponsor Kindergarten Eye Clinics beginning immediately.
A new law passed by the Illinois legislature requires that incoming kindergarten students for the 2008-2009 school year receive an eye examination by Oct. 15.
With financial support from the Palatine Lions Club, the Al Hoover Memorial PTA Health Fund and Palatine Vision Center, a reduced eye exam fee of $45 is available to incoming District 15 kindergarten students at Palatine Vision, 251 E. Northwest Highway. For information, visit www.palatinelions.org or call Palatine Vision at (847) 358-4950.
