Briefs: Condo project wins award

The Timber Court Condominium project in Arlington Heights has been awarded the 2008 Burnham Award for Excellence in Planning by the Metropolitan Planning Council. Timber Court is a 108-unit development near the Buffalo Grove border that has designated 20 percent of its units to be affordable for a family of four earning at or below $60,300. The units will remain affordable in perpetuity through a deed restriction. MPC will present the award at its annual luncheon Sept. 8 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. The award had been given out for 21 years and is named in honor of Daniel H. Burnham, creator of the 1909 Plan of Chicago.

Des Plaines OKs newsracks

Des Plaines aldermen this week created two mandatory modular newsrack districts: downtown and at the Cumberland Metra train station. They will take a final vote at the Sept. 2 council meeting. Publications may lease a modular news rack from the city at an annual fee of $25 a unit. No advertising, other than the name of the publication will be allowed on the modular units, and no individual news boxes would be allowed in the two areas. The racks, which the city bought a few years ago, will begin making an appearance this fall.
