Wheeling Police first in teen safety

The Wheeling Police Department has received first place honors for its Teen Driver Safety programs and second place overall recognition for Wheeling's traffic enforcement and educational initiatives from the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police. The department won its awards in this year's Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge competition, where law enforcement agencies compete against other similar-sized departments for overall traffic safety programs. The departments also are judged on projects to address specific areas of concern such as impaired driving, speeding, safety belt and child safety seats, commercial motor vehicle safety, pedestrian/bike safety and teen driving. The awards will be presented Aug. 13 at a recognition breakfast as part of the IACP-sponsored Police/Security Expo in Rosemont.

Cast your vote for Seven Wonders of Mt. Prospect

The voting stations are now available for the Seven Wonders of Mount Prospect awards. Ballot cups are located at the Mount Prospect Public Library, 10 S. Emerson St.; Midwest Bank, 50 N. Main St.; the Finance Department of the Village of Mount Prospect, 50 S. Emerson St.; MB Financial Bank, 15 E. Prospect Ave.; Busse Car Wash, 113 E. Prospect Ave. and the Dietrich Friedrichs Museum, 101 S. Maple St. A traveling set will be available at all the Mount Prospect Historical Society events through August. Donations in the form of small change or whatever is affordable are requested and can be placed into the container for any of the wonders the donor supports. Participants may vote as often as possible. The seven nominees that raise the most money will be named the Seven Wonders of Mount Prospect for 2008. Winners will be announced at the "Back to School Bash" fundraiser at Bogie's Ale House on August 22. Funds raised through this project will be used to support the Mount Prospect Historical Society's work to preserve community history.

The nominees are: Central School; Columns in the pond at Huntington Commons; Keefer's Pharmacy; Mount Prospect Historical Society Campus; Mount Prospect Public Library; Native American street names (Hiawatha, We-Go, Hi-Lusi, etc.); Officer Friendly Bill Roscop; Randhurst Shopping Mall; Saint John Lutheran Church and S-curve on Route 83.

Wheeling Academy starts in September

The Wheeling Police department will be hosting its 13th annual fall session of the Citizen Police Academy Sept. 4 through Nov. 13. The free classes meet from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday evenings and cover information on specific department units, such as patrol, traffic crime prevention, community relations, forensic evidence and investigations. The officers will also discuss domestic violence, child abuse, use of force, criminal and juvenile law, community policing and range training. Elks to hold free orthopedic clinic

The Des Plaines Elks Lodge 1526 and Schaumburg-Elk Grove Elks Lodge 2423 in cooperation with the Illinois Elks Children's Care Program will hold a free children's orthopedic diagnostic clinic for children without health insurance from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 7 at Northwest orthopedic Surgery Associates, 1120 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights. children will be seen by appointment only. The clinic is for ages birth to 21 years, and ideal for children with foot problems, or those that complain of leg, hip, shoulder, arm or back pain. Prospect parents offer football package

The Prospect Parents Football Council of Prospect High School have formed the Friday Knights Tailgate Club program for football parents, family and friends. Membership includes preferred parent seating, tickets to each regular season home/away game at District 214 schools via the district's quick pass program, a Knights seat cushion and a pre-game meal (main dish and non alcoholic drinks provided; bring dessert or side dish to share) Cost: Single, $75; couple, $140; three people, $200 and four people, $250. Kenneth Young Center needs help

Kenneth young Center is looking for caring people who want to make a difference. KYC counsels adults, kids and families through difficult times; helps elderly people manage in their own homes and guides people with serious mental illness back to independence.

• Meals on Wheels drivers are needed to deliver noon meals every other week in Elk Grove, Schaumburg and Arlington Heights.

• Help is needed for senior clients having problems completing applications for financial benefits. Training is provided.

• Resale Shop seeks evening volunteers from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday volunteer help.
