Briefs: Ogden bridge work delayed
Work to replace the bridge that carries Ogden Avenue over the west branch of the DuPage River in Naperville has been pushed back several weeks, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. The delay is caused by a holdup in the delivery of beams for the project. Once the $967,695 project gets under way, one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction.
Police hunt robber
A 31-year-old Aurora man told police he was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash and his watch at 4 p.m. Sunday in a grocery store parking lot in the 1900 block of West Galena Boulevard. The victim told police he was approached as he sat in his car by a shirtless male who demanded his money by implying he had a gun. The robber, described as 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing 160 pounds, with a large cross tattooed on the middle of his back, left in a dark blue automobile that was driven by another man. The total loss was $180.
Lifeguards revive toddler
A 3-year-old girl under her grandmother's supervision nearly drowned Sunday afternoon when the Carol Stream Park District pool's lifeguards revived the unconscious baby who wasn't breathing, police said. The toddler was found afloat in the shallow end of the pool, which was about 3-feet deep, officials said. Police responded just before 1:30 p.m. at the Simkus Recreation Center and Water Park. The child was transported to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield where officials say she is doing fine. Park district Executive Director Arnie Biondo said the pool closed for less than an hour at the time of the incident and then reopened.
Police warn of phone scam
Naperville police are advising residents of a recent telephone scam that has targeted at least three people this month. In the scam, a man calls the victim and claims to be their grandson. The man says he has been arrested in Canada for fishing without a license and needs bond money immediately. The victim is instructed to wire the money to Canada. The victim is further instructed to wire the money from either a Wal-Mart or U.S. Bank. Anyone who has been the victim of such a scam should contact police at (630) 420-6665.
Lombard offers defense class
Lombard police will hold a four-session Rape Aggression Defense Systems class for women, including lectures and self-defense techniques. Sessions run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. starting July 15 and then continuing July 16, 22 and 23. The course is taught by Lt. Jim Glennon and Sgt. Cyndy Abenante. Movie on elections
The Illinois Ballot Integryity Project, DuPage Chapter, will hold a special screening of "Uncounted: The New Math of American Elections" at 7 p.m. Friday at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Rice Campus Auditorium, 201 E. Loop Road, Wheaton. The event is nonpartisan and co-sponsored by Just Views. The suggested donation is $10.
