We must rise above partisan politics
In recent years, political discussion has turned ugly in this country.
Politics has become yet another spectator sport where your team is always right and the opponents are always wrong.
This extreme partisanship is toxic and stands in the way of progress on so many issues.
The 10th district is lucky to be represented by Mark Kirk.
Congressman Kirk seems to be part of a dying breed: An independent public servant who makes his decisions based on what is best for the people he represents.
He frequently breaks with the president and his party on issues like stem-cell research, gun control and the environment.
He voted for SCHIP, which provides health insurance to needy children, but is also a strong advocate of tort reform to curb the out-of-control medical malpractice lawsuits which are driving doctors out of Illinois.
Al Neuharth, founder of USA Today, once said "never hesitate to steal a good idea."
Kirk never hesitates to support a good idea. He backs good laws, regardless of what party is proposing them.
We need more people like Kirk in Congress. Maybe then we can get things done.
