Briefs: Brown hearing continued

A man convicted in 1999 of molesting three girls he coached at a Hanover Park gymnastics club is due back in a suburban Detroit court July 22 after a judge continued his hearing Tuesday on criminal sexual misconduct charges. Prosecutors allege Bryan Christopher Brown, 38, now of Warren, Mich., molested a 5-year-old girl. Brown, who spent nearly four years in an Illinois prison, also faces federal charges of sexual exploitation of children and possession of child pornography for allegedly enticing the girl to engage in sexual explicit conduct to for the purpose of producing a videotape of the act. That hearing is also scheduled for July 22.

Bartlett greening honored

Bartlett Village President Catherine Melchert has received a national recognition for her efforts to bring more environmentally friendly building practices to the village. She received honorable mention in a 2008 Mayor's Climate Protection Award program, sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Under Melchert's leadership, the Bartlett Village Board last year adopted new building code ordinances with both required and suggested energy efficiency features, such as efficient heating and cooling systems, increased insulation and windows certified for energy conservation. Of 60 nationwide applicants, 18 communities were selected for the honor, which was awarded at a mayor's conference in Florida last month.

Dodgeball Days coming

The registration deadline is Wednesday for the Ninth Annual Dodgeball Days Outdoor National Championships, which will take place at Olympic Field in Schaumburg July 18 and 19. Dodgeball Days is the final event of the 2007-08 season and features the crowning of the outdoor national champions. The youth competition, for grades 4 through 12, is July 18, while the adult competition is July 19. Multiple divisions and classes exist for men, women and co-rec teams.
