North Central receives grant

North Central College in Naperville has received a $100,000 Wal-Mart College Success award to launch a new program to prepare first-generation college students for postgraduate success as teachers. North Central was one of 20 colleges across the nation selected for the grant by the Council of Independent Colleges. The grant will fund recruitment activities and scholarships for students who enroll in North Central's Teach First initiative. The students will be mentored by North Central alumni who are first-generation college graduates and successful teachers themselves. Nationally, only 24 percent of first-generation college students succeed in earning a bachelor's degree, compared with 68 percent of students whose parents received a bachelor's degree.

Roadside safety check

The West Chicago Police Department will conduct roadside checks next month in conjunction with the DuPage County sheriff's office. The enforcement effort will be used to target motorists driving with defective equipment, those driving without a valid license or permit, no proof of insurance, or those under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
