Shots fired in Schaumburg home invasion
Schaumburg police believe a townhouse invaded by armed would-be robbers was specifically targeted and not a random incident.
A man and woman on the 1700 block of Nature Court were awakened around 12:45 a.m. Sunday when they heard the front door of their townhouse being forced open, a police report said.
The woman walked out of a second-floor bedroom and saw two men break through the front door downstairs. One of them had a handgun and both ran up the stairs and into the bedroom.
The two men ordered the victims to get on the floor and demanded money. The woman told them she didn't have any cash but offered her jewelry, police said.
But the two men only wanted money, police said. The man with the gun hit the male victim in the face with it, while the other offender kicked the woman in the side.
The man with the gun reportedly fired two shots during the incident, but not toward the victims. Police later found two spent shells on the bed.
The two men left without taking anything or searching any other part of the house. A woman in another bedroom hid in a closet during the incident and neither saw nor was seen by the offenders, police said.
"We believe the victims were targeted by the offenders," police Sgt. John Nebl said. "It was not a random event."
The man with the handgun was described as being in his 20s, 5 feet 7 inches tall, 175 pounds and wearing a black ski mask over his braided hair and a black shirt. The other man was also described as being in his 20s, about 6 feet tall and 250 pounds and wearing a black hoodie, dark jeans and black tennis shoes.
According to the report, the perpetrators smashed through the door with such force that the deadbolt lock broke the door frame.
Authorities do not believe this incident is connected to a June 25 home invasion on the 1400 block of Brownstone Place in Schaumburg. In that case, a man confronted a Rolling Meadows woman as she dropped off her child at a babysitter's, took her car keys during a struggle and then stole her car. That victim is believed to have been chosen randomly, Nebl said. No arrests have been made in that case.
