Carpentersville man charged with attempted murder in party stabbing

A McHenry County judge set bond at $300,000 this morning for a 22-year-old Carpentersville man charged with trying to kill another man over the weekend during a party in Crystal Lake.

Jonathan A. Soto, 27 Cardinal Lane, faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery and aggravated assault, alleging he stabbed a 19-year-old Crystal Lake man twice in the upper torso with a large kitchen knife.

"Apparently these two people knew each other," Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Dennis Harris said this morning. "We are still investigating to get all the facts about what their dispute was all about."

The stabbing took place about 12:49 a.m. Saturday during a large gathering outside a home on Oriole Trail, near Crystal Lake Avenue, police said.

The victim was taken to Centegra Memorial Medical Center in Woodstock. Police said he is expected to survive, but his condition was not immediately available.

Harris said investigators learned at the scene that Soto was the perpetrator and, with the assistance of Carpentersville police, arrested him in Carpentersville about 7 p.m. Saturday. He was transferred to the McHenry County jail, where he remains today.

Soto would face six to 30 years in prison if found guilty of the attempted murder charge. He is scheduled to appear in court Friday.
