Briefs: Outreach House gets grant
The Outreach House in Lombard can continue to offer the mobile food assistance truck from Northern Illinois Food Bank thanks to a $5,000 grant from the DuPage Community Foundation. That will allow for seven visits from the truck that serves 150 families from Lombard and Villa Park at a time. The trucks typically provide meat, dairy products, baked goods, canned items and cleaning supplies.
Schillerstrom pushes bill
DuPage County Board Chairman Robert Schillerstrom is urging Gov. Rod Blagojevich to sign legislation that would give malpractice immunity to doctors donating medical care in their own offices. The measure, which was approved by the state House and Senate, has been waiting for the governor's signature since last month. Schillerstrom said the legislation would enhance community-based health care programs like Access DuPage, which provides medical services to lower income county residents.
Dragonfly restoration
The DuPage County Forest Preserve and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have formalized a program aimed at benefiting the conservation of the endangered Hine's emerald dragonfly. The project will be carried out at Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve in Darien. The goal is to help sustain a habitat for the insect that's been on the endangered list since 1995. The dragonfly's habitat locally was disrupted by the extension of I-355 to I-80. The Illinois State Toll Highway Authority is funding the project.
