No injuries in Vernon Hills garage fire
No one was injured in a Vernon Hills garage fire Tuesday night, authorities said Wednesday morning.
Countryside fire officials said firefighters responded to a structure fire on the 200 block of Deerpath Lane just after 11:30 p.m.
Fire officials said occupants heard a loud bang outside the home, smelled smoke and immediately called 911.
The home's occupant alerted five other family members, opened the inside door leading to the garage and discovered the fire.
Everyone inside the home escaped without injury, fire officials said.
Crews were on the scene immediately and saw smoke coming from the garage of the single-family home.
Officials said the fire was under control in about 20 minutes, but crews remained on the scene to ensure it was completely out.
The fire remains under investigation, officials said, but initial findings point to the cause being electrical and involving a fan and an extension cord.
"The fire could have been much worse had one of the occupants not been awake to hear the bang, smell the smoke and alert the other sleeping occupants," Countryside Battalion Chief Brian Garrity said.
The home is habitable, though damages are expected to be about $90,000, officials said.
Countryside was assisted at the scene by fire departments in Mundelein, Libertyville and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods.
