Briefs: Man indicted in child porn case

A DuPage County grand jury this week indicted a 49-year-old Naperville man on 23 counts of child pornography, according to court records released Friday. Thomas A. Schmitz, 462 Valley Drive, will be arraigned on the felony charges Aug. 6 before DuPage Circuit Judge John Kinsella.

New public works director

Michael Hullihan will become Oak Brook's new public works director on Aug. 20. Hullihan currently is the director of public works and village engineer for Riverside. He has more than 30 years of experience, 20 of which were in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Hullihan was one of 34 applicants and will replace Michael Meranda, who will retire in late August. He will report directly to the village manager.

Judge opens Furstenau records

A DuPage County judge on Friday unsealed documents pertaining to Naperville Councilman Richard Furstenau's 2006 arrest for misdemeanor battery, in which he was accused of shoving a police officer. He later was acquitted and had the records sealed. However, Furstenau is suing the city and several police officers, so Terrence Sheahan, an attorney for the city, asked the court to open the records. The case is due in federal court for a status hearing Aug. 21.

Two join United Way

Two business and civic leaders have joined the Fox Valley United Way board of directors. John W. Potter, president of Dreyer Medical Clinic for nearly 30 years, will serve as vice chairman of the Finance Committee. Thomas G. Lindblom will bring additional representation from Kendall County. He is the retired executive director of campus operations at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, a member of the Yorkville Plan Commission since 1990, and deputy fire chief of the Bristol Kindall Fire Department for more than 35 years.

Sunday polo in Oak Brook

The Oak Brook Polo club will host two matches at 1 and 3 p.m. Sunday at the polo grounds, 31st Street and Polo Drive. During the first Chicago International Polo Club match, Dahlwood will take on Pinecroft, while Morgan Creek will compete against Villa del Lago in the second. Tickets are $10, $5 for seniors and free for ages 12 and younger; Parking is free. Visitors should bring lawn chairs for seating and my bring picnics. Food is also available for purchase. Farewell to old flags

Area residents who have old American flags worn beyond repair may drop them off at the Lisle Convention & Visitors Bureau to be disposed of in a flag retirement ceremony. Passport fair in Carol Stream

The Carol Stream post office will host a passport fair from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday. Sales associates will be available to help residents with passport applications, fees and photos. The post office is located at 550 E. Fullerton Ave.
