Editorial cartoon racially charged
The Daily Herald editorial page cartoon on Sunday was poorly chosen.
The left half of the cartoon shows John McCain with a 2000 button as if he were a better choice then.
The right half of the cartoon shows Barack Obama with a 2020 button as if he should wait.
I see two interpretations of that. One is the question of experience. The other is, as bigots claim, "America is not ready for a black president." And many bigots disguise the second interpretation as the first.
The Herald owes its readers an apology and a reexamination of its editorial page review policy.
This form of soft racism is insidious. It gives comfort to the enemies of freedom and equality and has no place in a general circulation newspaper.
