Forest preserve expansion
Fourth Lake Forest Preserve could be expanded through a land purchase recommended for approval last Thursday by two forest preserve board committees. The committees approved a contract to purchase for $360,000 seven acres as an addition to Fourth Lake Forest Preserve in Lake Villa and Avon Townships. What is known as the Wignot property is on the north side of Rollins Road just west of Route 45. The purchase is contingent on approval Tuesday by the forest board. The addition will increase Fourth Lake's size to about 517 acres. The property contains high quality wetlands, buffer, and a good quality wooded area. The acquisition would give the district increased control and management opportunities for a connection between the Rollins Savanna and Fourth Lake forest preserves.

Calling all volunteers
The United Way of Lake County invites county residents to participate in the National Day of Action activities June 21 to help advance the common good. Residents will have three ways to show support. They can go online to purchase back-to-school supplies for elementary school students of low-income families in Lake County communities. Residents can pass on the link www.FindHelpLakeCounty.org, an online searchable database of local health and human services, to friends, neighbors and co-workers. They can sign up for a one-day volunteer project to help Waukegan's Glenwood Elementary School undergo an extreme makeover or visit seniors at Libertyville's Winchester House. The Glenwood project has a morning and afternoon shift available to volunteers to transform the school and ready the facility for the children in the fall. To register for a volunteer project, purchase back-to-school supplies kits or for more information, visit www.liveunitedlakecounty.org or call (847) 775-1043.
