Briefs: New horn deal in Mundelein

Mundelein officials have hired a new company to take care of the automated train horns in town. Railworks Track Systems, a Nevada company, will handle maintenance of the seven stationary horns, which warn motorists of oncoming trains. The contract calls for the firm to be paid $800 a month for the work for the first year, with annual 5 percent increases for three years. Railroad Controls Inc., the Texas firm that sold the village the automated horns several years ago, had maintained the devices but no longer performs such work.

Train quiet zone?

Round Lake Park Mayor Jean McCue said the village is talking with Round Lake about possibly joining a quiet zone for trains. The discussions began after McCue received an e-mail request from the village of Round Lake. McCue said Round Lake Park has not decided whether to pursue the project. While she would like to see a quiet zone, McCue acknowledged she and other residents moved into the village knowing the railroad line already existed. She said pursuing a quiet zone would be a cost issue. "We don't want to throw away money we don't have," she said. And she added she also does not want a quiet zone to be a safety issue.
