Chicago bakery can satisfy wheat tooth

Most people with celiac disease won't think of biting into a chewy macaroon or a spicy snickerdoodle. But thanks to Chicago-based Whole Bakers they can do just that.

"I wanted to cater to everyone's taste by providing a variety of flavors," said founder Patty Stewart. "Just because people have Celiac doesn't mean they shouldn't have delicious options!"

Besides the six original varieties ˆ- Ginger Joy, Lemon Shortie, Sugar Drop, SnickerDo, Chewy Choco Chip and Rockin Choco Chip - CoCoNuts Macaroon and Wally Choco-Chip have been added to the lineup. All the equipment at the Whole Bakers plant is used only for the gluten-free line.

Taste-testers, some with gluten intolerance, others without, had nothing but good things to say about the cookies.

Lisa Lindemann of Palatine called the Sugar Drops the best sugar cookies she's had, comparing them to home-baked cookies she hasn't been able to eat in years.

So far the cookies are not available in local stores, but can be purchased online at www.wholebakers.com or by calling (773) 742-1834.
