St. John's annual rummage sale
St. John Lutheran Church will holds its annual rummage sale from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. June 20 and 21 on the southwest corner of Rodenburg and Irving Park roads in Schaumburg. Stop in and browse through the children's, women's and men's clothes, shoes and accessories; dishes; glassware; kitchen appliances; pots pans and other cookware; bedding of all kinds; towels; vases; ceramic planters; pictures; seasonal decorations; radios; tables and chairs. Plenty of parking available.
Splash in the Summer teen pool party
The Hoffman Estates police department and park district will host their annual "Splash in the Summer" teen pool party from 6 to 8 p.m. June 21 at Seascape Aquatic Center, 1300 Moon Lake Blvd. A DJ will spin music, police officers will meet and greet, and prizes will be raffled off throughout the evening. Tickets are free and can be picked up now at any park district location or at the police department, Gannon Drive and Golf Road. For more information, phone the police department at (847) 781-2873.
Mowing and Mooing at Spring Valley
Summer is a great time to get out to Spring Valley Nature Sanctuary, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg. Visitors can experience a wealth of activities from noon to 4 p.m. June 22. Watch the draft horses mow the hay field, help with the harvest, take a hay ride, churn butter, make farmer's cheese, milk the cow or take part in other offered activities. Homemade ice cream at Volkening Heritage Farm completes the experience.
Admission is $2 per person or $8 per family of six or fewer. Each additional member is $2 each. Children three and under are free. (847) 985-2100.
Starlight dancing in Barrington
Dance the night away under the stars at Citizens Park. The Barrington Area Council on Aging, Sunrise of Barrington and the Barrington Park District are sponsoring an evening of dancing, live music and refreshments at 7 p.m. June 27 at the Jewel Tea Pavilion in Citizens Park on Cost is $5. Singles and couples are welcome. Music will be provided by Vito Buffalo. Beer and wine may also be purchased for an additional fee. Pre-registration is required, call Linda Avellon at (847) 852-3892.
Learn the facts about breast cancer
Friendship Village of Schaumburg will present "Myths and Facts about Breast Cancer" from 1:30-2:30 p.m. June 24 in Assembly Hall, 350 W. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg. Mary Sue Fidale, breast health specialist nurse at Good Shepherd Hospital, will dispel the myths and give you the facts on breast cancer. Breast health, mammograms and diet will be discussed. Free. Escaping Illinois
Looking for a getaway that doesn't mean splurging on gas? Grab a seat on Harper's bus for an all-day trip to southwest Wisconsin's Little Norway and Cave of the Mounds. The July 18 event is the latest in a series of Harper-hosted summer excursions aimed at giving suburbanites an angst-free vacation in a time of rising air fares and higher prices at the pump. Tickets are $85, with discounts for senior citizens and students. The daylong excursion includes guided tours of Little Norway and Cave of the Mounds - all participants are guaranteed to bring home a gemstone - as well as a hotdog lunch and dinner at the historic Quivey's Grove Stone House restaurant. The bus leaves Harper at 7 a.m. and return at about 10 p.m. For tickets or further details, call (847) 925-6100. Early booking is encouraged; a July 30 trip to see the Chicago Cubs play in Milwaukee already has sold out. A previously advertised June 27 trip to Milwaukee has been canceled.
