Charge upgraded to murder

A McHenry County grand jury has upgraded the charges against a man accused in the death of his infant daughter. Eighteen-year-old Salvador Avila of Woodstock was indicted Thursday on a first-degree murder charge in the February death of his infant daughter. Avila had been charged with aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery of a child after his 2½-month-old daughter suffered serious injuries. Nichole Ownes of the McHenry County state's attorney's office says the more serious charge was filed against Avila after the grand jury reviewed reports from medical experts. Authorities said the girl appeared to have been shaken violently. The baby was transferred from Mercy Harvard Hospital to Rockford Memorial Hospital, where she died Feb. 18.
