Briefs: Lake County building evacuated

The Lake County Building in downtown Waukegan was evacuated for a brief time about 10:45 a.m. Thursday. A maintenance department supervisor said a fire alarm on the building's north side was accidentally set off by a construction worker working on the building's parking garage. The Waukegan Fire Department sent a pumper truck to the building. Employees and visitors were allowed to re-enter the building after an inspection. The event lasted about 15 minutes; no injuries were reported.

New Woodland deal

Woodland Elementary District 50 announced Thursday it has struck a one-year contract extension with the union representing teachers and support staff. Base teacher salary increases will range from 1.1 percent to 5.92 percent. The support staff will get raises of 75 cents an hour. The pact will run through the 2008-08 academic year. Both sides have ratified the contract.

New principals hired

Two veteran educators will lead Libertyville High School as co-interim principals for the 2008-09 term, the Libertyville-Vernon Hills Area High School District 128 board decided Tuesday. Jim Whittington and Michael P. Stevens were tapped to replace outgoing Principal Brad Swanson. Whittington once led Vernon Hills High and Stevens was principal at Prospect High School in Mount Prospect. Both retired in recent years.
