Jacobs, police look to cope with rumors

A volatile combination of violent threats and technology-savvy students at Jacobs High School have put officials in a bind, Principal Michael Bregy said.

Problems began at the school last Friday, with a fight involving Jacobs students and teens from another school, Bregy said.

Police said the fight led to two additional brawls on Monday among Jacobs students, which resulted in four arrests.

Despite an increased Algonquin police presence at the school this week, student text messages and postings on social networking sites have spread a host of unsubstantiated rumors about more potential fights at the school.

"The technology has created an out-of-control swirl," Bregy said.

"We've gotten calls upon calls from parents. … The problem is, there has been nothing tangible to confirm these threats," Bregy said.

In this situation, law enforcement officials said, a clearly communicated response plan is vital.

Elgin Area School District U-46 Safety Coordinator John Heiderscheidt -- a former Buffalo Grove police officer -- said school and police officials must be "as transparent as possible" with the community.

Engaging students in the process is key, he said.

"The lion's share of information (in these situations) usually comes from students," he said.

"You chase those rumors down as much as you can -- and move forward with a plan from that point," Heiderscheidt said. "And you carry on. … That may mean extra police presence to assure people you're watching, you're aware."

Extra counseling sessions and an anonymous tip line are available for Jacobs students, Bregy said. The school also plans an increased police presence as well as "a strong unified front" by school staff next week.

"We're on high alert," Bregy said. "But at the same time, we are trying to conduct business as usual."
