Karate

AAIJ champions: The American Tiger Karate Academy "Tiger Team," coached by Pat Pusateri and Amy Kaminski, competed in the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) Regional Karate Championships April 12 and 13 held at the College of Lake County in Grayslake. This tournament hosts top karate competitors from the Central Division which includes Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa and Indiana. The following team members, residents of Elk Grove Village and students of School District 59 and Elk Grove High School, received gold, silver or bronze medals and will now compete in the USA AAU National championships in Albany, N.Y. in July.

Novice Division: Ryan Uehara (age 8), gold medal in forms and gold medal in sparring; and Daniel DiMaria (age 12), silver medal in sparring and bronze medal in forms.

Intermediate Division: Amy Carroll (age 14), silver medal in forms; Kenji Iloribe (age 13), bronze medal in forms; and Ben Weir (age 13), bronze medal in sparring.

Advanced (Black Belt) Division: Robby Uehara (age 13), gold medal in forms, bronze medal in sparring; Ishak Civic (age 11), silver medal in sparring.
