Materials accepted will include oil-based paint, old gasoline, solvents, fungicides, unwanted prescriptions, medicines and supplements, insecticides, motor oil, pesticides, household cleaners, paint remover, household batteries (alkaline and rechargeable), driveway sealer, antifreeze, drain cleaner, garden and lawn chemicals, aerosol products, pool chemicals, hobby chemicals, asbestos, and mercury (including thermometers and thermostats and fluorescent light bulbs).
School wins sweepstakes
Lake Zurich's Paine Elementary School won first place along with two Michigan schools in the second annual Michigan Apple School Sweepstakes, a program that instills healthy eating habits in students and gives support to local farmers. The contest, developed by the Michigan Apple Committee, is open to accredited K-12 schools in Michigan and Illinois. Nine schools received first, second and third-place cash prizes of $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000, respectively, in this year's contest. To participate, students clip and save the Michigan Apples logo from bags of apples. Each logo collected counts as an entry for that school. Winners are chosen in a random drawing. The committee will offer the sweepstakes program next year with a few new twists. Prize amounts will increase to $5,000, $3,000 and $1,000, and a new computer will be awarded to the top two schools collecting the most Michigan Apples logos.
