Cougars blanked

The Quad Cities River Bandits scored a run after a controversial call and went on to beat the Kane County Cougars 4-0 in front of 8,068 Saturday night at Elfstrom Stadium.

In the sixth inning, with reliever Brad Hertzler on the mound, Cougars outfielder Shane Keough appeared to make a diving catch in right-center to rob D'Marcus Ingram, but the umpires ruled it a basehit, leading to manager Aaron Nieckula's ejection. Hertzler retired the next two hitters, but Paul Vazquez's bloop single made it 1-0. Hertzler gave up 3 more runs in the ninth.

Cougars starter Craig Italiano allowed 3 hits in 5 shutout innings with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts for a no-decision. Italiano has allowed 1 earned run in his last 9 appearances, a 46-inning span.

The Cougars had 7 hits but stranded 10 baserunners on the way to being shut out for the sixth time this season. Mark Diapoules (3-0) earned the win for Quad Cities.

T-Bonds pound Flyers: The host Kansas City T-Bones beat the Schaumburg Flyers 13-1. Flyers starter Steve Shippey (0-2) took the loss.
